Drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk - a winter tradition "A dream world born out of ice"
The Sea of Okhotsk covers a large expanse to the northeast of Hokkaido. A winter feature and attraction is the journey that drift ice takes every year over the course of 1,000 kilometers between end of January to the end of March, to finally arrive against the shores of Hokkaido. The drift ice begins as pure water from the Amur River, which winds between the borders of China and Russia. As it pours into the Sea of Okhotsk, its low salt content lends itself to the creation of drift ice.
