Masuda City faces out to the Sea of Japan and stands on the westernmost part of Shimane Prefecture. From ancient times it has been known for a traditional art performance called Iwami Kagura, a kind of masked dance theater. Within the city there are a number of theater groups that regularly hold Iwami Kagura performances. The two gardens created by the ink painter Sesshu (1420-1506) are nationally designated cultural assets.
