Experience Wildlife and Nature at "Rausu", "Nakashibetsu", and "Nemuro"
Nakashibetsu Airport is convenient for those who want to visit "Rausu", a home for many sea creatures, which is located on the east of Shiretoko Peninsula. Drive through the beautiful place of lakes and capes.
"Rausu" Animal Cruises
About 70 minutes by car from Nakashibetsu Airport. The sea at Shiretoko Peninsula ｢Rausu｣ is the southernmost tip of the world where "drift ice" from Russia comes flowing in. The animal sighting cruises are quite popular here. Many wild animals living in mountains and sea can be spotted from these cruises.
The main attractions include killer whales that can be sighted from April to early July, and sperm whales that can be sighted from mid-July to early October.
Winter is the season for bird watching. You can sight Steller's sea eagle and white-tailed eagle during the winter. The only place where you can experience bird watching and drift ice together!
Summer attraction is the "Brown bear boat cruise". This small size boat lets you have a closer look at brown bears.

"Kaiyodai Observatory" (Nakashibetsu)
A sightseeing tower with almost 330 degree panoramic view. You can actually see the curvature of the earth from here.
About 70 minutes by car from the airport. Home to the species of largest swans found in Japan. Viewing various plants in summer and birds in winter are popular activities in "Shunkunitai" island that divides the lake and the "Nemuro Bay".
About 45 minutes by car from "Lake Furen". "Nemuro", the easternmost town in Japan where you can experience the earliest sunrise. "Cape Nosappu" is the best spot to enjoy the sunrise.
"Lake Mashu" (Teshikaga)
About 1 hour by car from the airport. A beautiful lake that has been rated 3 stars in the travel guide "Michelin Green Guide Japan". Ranked second most clearest lake in the world, it is also called as "Mashu Blue" for its beautiful blue color. The atmosphere is usually misty from June to July, giving this place a mystical feel.
The urchin season in "Rausu" runs from January to June. The salmon found in summer is called the "Tokishirazu salmon" and is fatty and quite delicious. Hanasaki crab is the specialty of "Nemuro", and a "Crab festival" is held every year in the month of September.

Cape Nosappu is the easternmost cape and can be found in Nemuro City, Hokkaido. Cape Nossapu Lighthouse is Hokkaido's oldest lighthouse and was built right on the edge of the ocean, and it has become a symbol of Cape Nosappu. It has gained fame as a spot where visitors can see the first sunrise in all of Hokkaido, and many people come on New Year's Day to make a prayer as the sun peeks over the horizon for the first time.
