Night view from Mount Hakodate
The view from the observation deck is 3 listed as a star in the "Michelin Green Guide Japan" travel guide. The best time to take photographs, with dark blue skies and city lights, is about 30 minutes after sunset.
These are the only two star-shaped citadels in Japan, built to replicate the European fortified cities. The cherry blossoms and snowy landscape in spring are something worth seeing.
This area has many churches and western-style buildings; it almost feels like being in a different country. Among the many hills in Hakodate, the most famous one is the "Hachiman Zaka" in this area.
